First Time Fishing In Costa Rica

As a young child, I remember trips that my grandfather would take to foreign countries for hunting birds and fishing. I couldn’t wait for him to get home, not for the presents he would bring but for the stories he would tell of his adventures. I always left his house asking myself, “I wonder when I will get to take a trip like that?”
Well that day finally came this year, and it was the trip of a lifetime!

On March 10th, Joe, John, Bob, Robert, and I were invited to bill fish on the “Southern Pride” out of Los Suenos, Costa Rica. We were accompanied by Kevin and Ashley, sons of the boat owner Mr. Smith. Flying together we arrived in Costa Rica around 2 p.m. and proceeded by coach to our final destination of Los Suenos. It is considered to be home of the finest marina on the west coast of Central America.

We headed out of port Friday morning for a very quick ride 35 miles out into the deep blue Pacific Ocean. Our fishing action started off with a very nice sailfish within just a couple of hours of leaving the marina. It was our first of 14 for the day and for someone who had never caught a sail, I was in hog heaven!

On Saturday, we headed out around 8 am and Captain Chris wanted to troll for a tuna for a few minutes. Maneuvering around a school of Spinner Dolphins, it only took ten minutes for us to get a big hit on the long line. A tuna was on! It was my turn in the chair and the battle ensued, but this yellow fin had other things on his mind besides being lunch and ran through the props on the boat and cut the line.

So we ventured out a few more miles looking for some Marlin and Sailfish. It didn’t take long to get hooked up again. This day Captain Chris put us on the spot going 17 for 30 on sails but still missing the elusive Marlin. We’ll have to save that one for next time.

Many thanks to Mr. Smith and his championship crewman for allowing us an unreal fishing trip that I will be telling my son for many years to come.
